Often the most undervalued hire at seed in consumer subscription businesses. Equity at seed typically 0.25 - 0.75%. Rates vary with experience and scope.
| Role | Seed | Series A | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head of Customer | 0.25% - 0.75% | 0.1% - 0.4% | Often underequitised relative to impact. Stronger in subscription businesses where retention is central to the model. |
Equity figures represent percentage of fully diluted share capital on grant. Actual allocation depends on vesting schedule (typically 4 years, 1-year cliff), option scheme structure, and valuation at time of hire.
| Role | Full-time | Fractional |
|---|---|---|
| Head of Customer | 1 - 3 months | 1 - 2 weeks |
Notice periods affect your search timeline. Factor in 4-8 weeks for a typical hiring process on top of notice. Senior candidates at large companies may have 6-month notice clauses - garden leave is sometimes negotiable.
Stage experience
Candidates who have done the specific job at your stage before - not just at a bigger company - command a premium. A Head of Customer who built the first retention programme, the first onboarding flow and the first support process at a seed-stage consumer brand is worth more to you than one who inherited a 40-person customer team.
Equity appetite
Candidates willing to take meaningful equity in lieu of cash compress the salary range. Head of Customer is the role most often under-equitised relative to its impact in a subscription business, so the candidates who ask for more equity at seed are usually the ones who understand what they are worth to retention. If your model lives or dies on churn, meet them on it.
Retention specialism
Generalists from customer service backgrounds tend to sit at the lower end. Operators who treat customer as a retention function - onboarding, churn analysis, win-back, NPS as a leading indicator rather than a vanity number - and can show the numbers moved, price accordingly. In subscription and DTC that is the whole job.
Company pedigree
Candidates who have built the same thing you are building - at a company that did it well - command a meaningful premium. A Head of Customer from Bloom & Wild or Huel has seen what happens to churn when acquisition scales faster than onboarding. The value isn't the brand on the CV - it's that they know what good looks like on the other side of the problems you haven't met yet.
Ask
“What does your ideal onboarding journey look like for a subscription business?”
Why it matters
The first 30 days define retention. Anyone serious about this role has a view on it.
Ask
“How have you used customer data to change a product decision?”
Why it matters
The best Heads of Customer act as a bridge between the customer and the product team. If they've never influenced product, they've been operating in a silo.
Ask
“Tell me about a customer you saved who was about to churn. What did you learn?”
Why it matters
Specific examples reveal how they think. Vague answers about 'improving NPS' reveal process-following rather than problem-solving.
Do this
Understand their churn rate before you arrive.
Why it works
If they'll share it, benchmark it against category norms. Coming in with this context signals you understand the real stakes of the role.
Do this
Ask about the feedback loop between customer and product.
Why it works
If there isn't one, you're being hired to manage symptoms rather than fix causes. Know what you're walking into.
Do this
Be ready to talk about the metrics you own.
Why it works
NPS, CSAT, churn rate, LTV. Founders at this stage want someone who thinks in numbers, not just stories.
